Divorce, Including Traditional Litigation

Divorce is one of the most difficult transitions a person makes. Which is why it is critical to work with a family law attorney who can navigate you through this stressful time quickly and effectively. Steve has helped couples successfully divorce for more than 30 years.

Divorce is emotionally and financially difficult, so we never allow a divorce case drag on. When working with a client, we take immediate steps to:

  • Ensure your financial stability and security
  • Empower you to take an active role in decision-making
  • Protect your relationship with your children
  • Identify your rights and responsibilities as a parent
  • Move you through the divorce process as quickly and painlessly as possible

The purpose of divorce is to undo the legal relationship created by marriage while protecting personal interests and family relationships. Divorce will affect nearly every aspect of your life. Fortunately, most issues in divorce are resolved through negotiation, but it is essential to understand your rights and responsibilities, and to have clearly defined goals and objectives.

We help clients reach marriage dissolution agreements on all issues of divorce, including:

  • Dividing Assets and Debts
  • Asset Valuation and Classification Issues
  • Complex property division, including the tax implications of dividing marital assets
  • Child Custody and Possession Issues
  • Child support
  • Modification of custody or support orders
  • Alimony (spousal support)

Most people, particularly those with significant assets, fear that divorce will be costly and take years to conclude. A traditional proceeding, in which a Texas family court judge makes decisions for you, can make the situation even worse. There is no need to spend years tied up in the Texas courts, and our goal is to make sure this doesn’t happen. In addition to traditional divorce, we often incorporate less contentious practices such as collaborative law and mediation to calmly and smoothly transition people out of marriage.

Occasionally, during a contentious divorce case when emotions are high, safety becomes a concern. In these situations, obtaining an Order for Protection is sometimes necessary in order to ensure the safety of our client. Our legal team handles these delicate issues with the utmost discretion.

Spousal Support in Texas

Texas does not guarantee spousal support, although Texas family courts do make every effort to cushion the financial blow and provide resources during the divorce process. The court may order temporary support to allow a party to obtain education for career purposes. Post divorce permanent support may be ordered for a physically or mentally disabled child or when one spouse is disabled or elderly and has been in a long-term marriage. Ongoing medical and/or life insurance is often included in a spousal support agreement as well.

Our goal is to ensure you receive fair treatment and an equitable share of the financial assets of the marital estate. Regardless of your employment status in or out of the home, your contribution to your marriage and family should be recognized.
